This artbook is an introduction to the world of Tamil mother goddesses, known as “Amman.” The Lady in the Red Saree contains full-color original illustrations and brief insights into the lore of 12 different Ammans. If there is enough interest, there will be a PART 2 in the future, detailing more Ammans as well as specific rituals :)
The first 10 preorders will receive a free 7.5 × 11 in. print of the KOTRAVAI, the goddess of war, as well as a print of MEENAKSHI, the warrior-queen of Madurai.
EXCERPT:
“It is the Tamil month of Aadi, and there is beautiful chaos everywhere. Worshippers throng to temples clad in yellow and smeared with vermillion. Overwhelmed by the occasion, some fall into trances, eyes rolled back and hands raised above their heads, shouting and stumbling. Along the delta of the Kaveri river, a procession of women carry a pot of sprouted grains, heralding the monsoon season ahead. Villagers gather in a circle, dancing and clapping their hands to the beat of a kummi song. At the heart of all of these festivities is a particular kind of woman: Sivappuselaikkari, “The Lady in the Red Saree.”
She has more well-known names: Mari, Neeli, Sooli, Achi, Mahamayi, Atha, Selli, among many others. She causes the black earth to grow with green, just as much as she leaves the desert to dry and decay. She is blood red, giving life and taking it away all the same.”
